If you have any questions, feel free to call me at 801-458-8910. My name is Mike Baker and I have been involved with this event for the last four years. It really is an awesome thing to see. We help nearly 2,000 kids during this two day event.
Each kid receives free of charge the following services:
Medical Check-Up
Immunizations
Dental Screening
Hearing Screening
Vision Screening
Developmental Screening
Haircuts
The total dollar value of these services if purchased in the private setting would be about $700.00. The total cost to provide these services to these kids is about $25.00 per child during the event.
Unlike traditional health fairs, the Health Connection provides follow-up care to children identified with a medical, dental or other problem. A team of case managers works with each child, their family and local healthcare providers to treat the identified problems. Each year, nearly 1,000 children are referred for follow-up care. Typically children from the Health Connection receive about $375,000 in follow-up care from the community.
What is the Children’s Health Connection?
For 10 years, McKay-Dee Hospital, Junior League of Ogden and Midtown Community Health Clinic have organized and sponsored Children’s Health Connection, a program designed to provide inner-city Ogden residents long-term access to healthcare.
Program’s goals
The Children’s Health Connection program has six goals:
To assist Ogden City’s medically underserved in obtaining healthcare services
To identify health problems and case manage follow-up care until all problems are resolved
To educate families on appropriate access to medical care, insurance, and community healthcare resources available to them
To raise awareness in the community about the needs of the underserved
To build partnerships and collaborations with community agencies who are willing to help improve access to healthcare
Connect people to available healthcare resources within the community
To achieve these goals, the Health Connection stresses the fact that it is not simply a health fair. The program includes a two-day Children’s Health Connection event and a similar event for women. But its lofty goals entail a continual process, not merely a project.
Health Connection organizers also believe that addressing medical needs in inner-city Ogden contributes to achieving other more general goals such as improving residents’ quality of life and increasing educational opportunities for Ogden children.
